Right options for Eye Exam

During an eye exam, the optometrist can detect more than just myopia or presbyopia. By examining your retina, it is on the front line for seeing serious illness. Here are tips from the experts.

The eyes: the mirror of health

The eyes are not only the mirror of the soul: they also say a lot about your health. Optometrists are often the first to spot serious illnesses brain tumors, high blood pressure, diabetes by examining the blood vessels in the retina.

Make an appointment for an eye exam

All adults should have an eye exam every two years, or every year for people over 60. According to the Optometrists, two in three older people suffer from eye disease, such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Thief of sight

Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness, is called a silent thief of sight. In the early stages, it’s asymptomatic. To spot it before it does any damage, it is important to have your eyes examined regularly and to measure the pressure inside the eyeball.

Optician or optometrist?

The eye exam at the optician is not the same as at the optometrist. Automated vision measurement says nothing about your eye health; it does not identify, among other things, muscle coordination, parallelism of visual axes or irregularities of the lens.

Blink often

When you have an eye exam, relax and blink often. If you don’t, the tear film on the surface of the eyes will start to tear, and it will be more difficult for you to determine the sharper lens.

Remove your lenses to sleep

Take your lenses off to sleep, even for a nap. Closed eyelids on lenses block the passage of oxygen to the cornea, and bacteria love dark, humid environments. The risk of a corneal ulcer is 10 to 15 times higher if you spend the night with your lenses.

Liquid preparations are more effective than tablets, which need to be chewed thoroughly before swallowing to ensure they dissolve completely in the stomach. However, tablets have the advantage of being more easily portable.
